Our sustainability work

 

Selcable members work actively to achieve high sustainability goals. Design, material use, manufacturing processes, use and final disposal are all areas that have a special environmental focus among our members.

Selcable's environmental committee also regularly monitors developments and legal requirements that affect the cable industry. We have also developed templates for environmental declarations to uniformly report the material properties of our products, where SEG's system for Environmental Declarations is also used. All environmental declarations are available in SEG's E-number bank. We also have a common return system for cable drums.

Selcable's members also follow the Eurocable Industry Charter to ensure a long-term stable society.

Cable drum return system

A cable drum can be reused up to eight times before it is recycled. That is why cable manufacturers within Selcable have a return system for cable drums. In this way, we contribute to the industry's reduced environmental impact!

Classification of cable waste

The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency recommends that all cable be classified as hazardous waste unless otherwise proven. Since most Swedish cable does not need to be classified as hazardous waste, Selcable has produced a list of Swedish cable. The list makes it easier to classify cable waste for sorting and recycling.

The list is based on the marking that is already on all Swedish cables. The marking contains information about the manufacturer, cable type, and the year and month of manufacture. This provides a clear starting point for assessing the cable and how it should be sorted.

ECO design

Directive 2009/125/EC, also known as the Ecodesign Directive, is a directive that sets minimum requirements for the energy performance of products throughout their life cycle. The directive also bans the most energy- and resource-intensive products on the European market.

Since 2012, power cables have been included in the directive. Europacable and Selcable believe that this inclusion is based on incomplete and incorrect information. Although we support the EU's ambition to reduce carbon emissions and increase energy efficiency, we believe that there are many other parameters that contribute to the energy efficiency of indoor electrical installations. Cables installed in these installations offer only a marginal contribution to achieving the overall objectives.

REACH – Registration, evaluation, authorization and restriction of chemicals

Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) is an EU harmonization tool for chemicals management that came into force in 2007.

The REACH Regulation contains, among other things, rules on registration of substances, bans or other restrictions on substances, requirements for permits for particularly hazardous substances and rules on informing customers. If you manufacture, import or sell goods and chemical products in the EU/EEA, you need to follow the rules that apply to your business. The Regulation also contains rules that you, as a user of chemical products, must comply with.

RoHS – Restriction of Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment

The RoHS Directive (Directive 2011/65/EU) restricts the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic products. The Directive restricts six hazardous substances in certain electrical and electronic products. Additional substances are under consideration.

Deforestation Ordinance

The EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) aims to prevent trade in goods that contribute to deforestation and forest degradation around the world. The Swedish Forest Agency is the competent authority that monitors compliance with the regulation's provisions. The regulation will enter into force on 30 December 2025. When trading cables delivered on a wooden drum, the cable is the product being traded, not the drum. This means that the drum is not covered by the regulation. However, if you buy and sell the drums as a separate product, they are included because they fall under a relevant commodity code found in Annex 1 to the regulation, which is commodity code 4415.

It is the responsibility of each Selcable member to ensure that their cable drum supplier complies with the regulation.
